ST. LEON, IN — The Sunman-Dearborn School Board is considering two proposals for the use of the former North Dearborn Elementary School location.
A local group previously presented a proposal to the school board for a community park, and two of the corporation’s agriculture teachers recently made a presentation to create an agri-science facility.
The proposal by East Central High School’s Roy Johnson and McCord Snider from East Central Middle School calls for a 70,000 square-foot facility to be built on just over 23 acres on the former North Dearborn property.
The estimated price tag would be around $15 million.
“The agriculture teachers presented a 3-4 year plan on how to grow their program and increase programming opportunities for our students,” Superintendent Dr. Andrew Jackson told WRBI. “Their presentation culminated with a possible school/community partnership agri-science facility.
“Our current building project is structured in a way to allow for additional work to be complete in 4-5 years, without increasing our property tax rate,” Dr. Jackson added. “We already know some mechanical systems will need to be replaced then as well as the metal roof at East Central Middle School. We will have the capacity to consider additional projects as well.”
As was the case with the community park, the school board has taken the teachers’ plan under advisement.
