Flu-like illness stronger than ever in the State

Statewide—The Indiana Department of Health continues to reports the flu virus being widespread in Indiana. There have been nine deaths in the state as of December 28 attributed to flu with the majority being people over age 65. 3 of those deaths have been in the 25-49 age category.

Lab reports show that H1N1 and Influenza B have been spilt nearly 50/50 of positive results of the viruses being circulated.   Throughout the state, more than 5% of all emergency room visits were for influenza-like illness during that week, according to the Indiana State Department of Health.

Dr. Richard Feldman says it is odd that Influenza B is already high, but more concern should be focused on if H1N1 changes to H3N2 as it did last year that led to so many deaths.

Health officials are asking those who have mild symptoms not to head to the hospital for care. Instead, those who do not have severe symptoms should first see a primary care provider or head to an urgent care center.

According to the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention’s nationwide data there has been at least 6.4 million flu illnesses, 55,000 hospitalizations and 2,900 deaths from flu. It’s not too late to get vaccinated. Flu vaccination is always the best way to prevent flu and its potentially serious complications.
