(Franklin County, IN) – The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office is out with a warning about housing and rental scams.
Deputies say no legitimate realtor, home owner or landlord would accept gift cards as a down payment.
You’re urged not to give out your social security number, banking information or other personal details.
Deputies say there is very little that can be done with this type of fraud since the scammers are usually from foreign countries – even if they’ve created a local Facebook profile.
They will steal the money from the gift card and you will not be able to get it back.
Deputies add you should never try to pay for items with company gift cards.
