Eugene W. Freyer, of Sunman, was born on May 31, 1949 in Batesville, a son to Donald Howard and Lucille Eliza Richter Freyer. He graduated from Sunman High School and later entered the Air Force Reserves; in 1968 his unit was activated and he served his country in Vietnam. Eugene worked at Seagrams over 40 years and farmed for 50 plus years. Both Eugene, in 2012 and his father, Donald in 2014 were inductees into the Ripley County Basketball Hall of Fame. He was an active member of the Batesville and Sunman American Legions, the Batesville VFW, and was an associate member of the Batesville Knights of Columbus. Eugene was a current member of the VFW Honor Guard and actively participated in military dedications and funerals playing taps. He attended St. Stephens Evangelical Lutheran Church-Spades. On Friday, July 13, 2018 at the age of 69, Eugene passed away at his residence.
Those surviving who will cherish Eugene’s memory include his daughter, Tricia Freyer of Cincinnati, OH; son, Trent Freyer of Sunman; fiancé Pam Schoettelkotte of Batesville; brother, Gerald (Kristine) Freyer of Springport, IN; sister, Joyce (Paul) Werner of Mason, OH; his children’s mother, Edna Gilbert of Sunman, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Friends may visit with the family on Tuesday, July 17, 2018 from 4 until 8 p.m. at Cook Rosenberger Funeral Home, 107 Vine Street, Sunman. Services will be held on Wednesday at 10 a.m. at St. John’s UCC-Penntown. Burial with full military honors will follow in the church cemetery.
