Elsie Mae (Burlage) Luke, 88, Dillsboro

       Elsie (Burlage) Luke, a beloved member of the Elrod, Indiana community, passed away on Friday May 24, 2024.  Born November 8, 1935 in Aurora, Indiana, Elsie lived a life marked by dedication to her family, career, and community.

Elsie pursued her passion for nursing at St. Elizabeth Nursing School. Elsie then married Paul Luke on May 24, 1958. They established a farm in Elrod, Indiana, where they built a loving home together.

Elsie and Paul were blessed with one daughter, Mary Jane Schmaltz, who brought immense joy into their lives. Elsie’s family grew with the addition of her son-in-law Chris Schmaltz, two cherished grandchildren, Eric and Emily, and her great-grandchildren, Stella and Theo. She took great pride in her family, often sharing stories and accomplishments of her loved ones with friends and neighbors.

A devoted nurse, Elsie furthered her impact on the healthcare community by teaching at Southeastern Career Center. Her dedication to nursing and education inspired many students who went on to become compassionate and skilled healthcare professionals. Elsie was also a member of the Ripley County Retired Teachers Association and the Ripley County Health Board.

Elsie was an active and faithful member of St. John’s Lutheran Church. In addition to her professional and religious commitments, Elsie was a passionate volunteer 4-H leader. She dedicated countless hours to mentoring young people in the community, helping them develop valuable skills and a sense of responsibility. Her generosity, kindness, and unwavering support made a lasting impact on everyone who knew her. She was known to be an amazing baker, especially being known for her delicious chocolate chip cookies. Elsie also enjoyed collecting dolls.

Elsie Luke will be remembered for her unwavering dedication to her family, her students, and her community. Her legacy of service and love will continue to inspire all who knew her. She leaves behind a family who adored her, friends who cherished her, and a community grateful for her contributions. She is survived by her daughter Mary (Chris) Schmaltz of Mlian; brother Clinton (Judy) Burlage of Aurora; sisters Nancy Casey of Aurora and Annis Luke of Dillsboro; sister-in-law Jan Burlage of Greendale; grandchildren Eric Schmaltz and Emily Schmaltz; and great-grandchildren Stella Schmaltz and Theo Bowles.

Elsie was preceded in death by her parents Louis and Elsie (Richards) Burlage; husband Paul Luke; brother Harlan Burlage; and brothers-in-law Jerry Casey and Art Luke.

A celebration of Elsie’s life will be held at Laws-Carr-Moore Funeral Home in Milan on Thursday, May 30, 2024 with visitation 1:00pm – 3:00pm and service to immediately follow with Pastor Jared Tucher officiating. Burial will follow at St. John’s Lutheran Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the St. John’s Cemetery Fund or the Milan Volunteer Fire Department in her memory.
