(St. Leon, IN) – Congratulations to the East Central FFA National Nursery/Landscape team.
Jasmin Keith, Riley Shumate, Evan Kramer, and Wyatt Smith placed 22nd out of 43 teams, and earned a silver placing at the 97th FFA National Convention & Expo last week in Indianapolis.
The Nursery/Landscape Career Development Event (CDE) is a competition in which FFA members test their knowledge and skills in nursery practices and landscaping.
Participants must complete a general knowledge exam testing horticultural principles including plant anatomy, production, marketing, turf, landscape design and maintenance.
Each participant must also complete practicums involving landscape estimating, plant propagation or potting, identification of ornamental plants, plant pests, diseases and plant disorders.
They complete verbal customer assistance practicums and members also tested their hands on skills by completing a series of landscape related practicums.
This year members built a retaining wall and a paver patio, placed sod, and explained to a judge safety checks and operational procedures for a skid steer as well as an intermediate walk behind mower.
Outside of the CDE, East Central FFA checked out companies and organizations at the National FFA Expo, and met other members from the United States, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands during the convention.
They also attended the Second General Session in Lucas Oil Stadium, which included member talent performances, award ceremonies, and guest speakers.
