East Enterprise resident earns American Legion honor

Indianapolis, In. — The American Legion, Department of Indiana has named East Enterprise resident, Travis Griffith the 2018 Kindergarten through 6th grade Educator of the Year.

Griffith was sponsored by Post 185, from the 9th District.

“American Legion officers selected Griffith because of his continued work to educate the future of our state,” said 9th District Cmdr. William Scharold.  “Unfortunately, our awardee, Travis Daniel Griffith passed away with his loving family by his side in March.  He was only 46 years old and leaves behind 4 children and his wife of 21 years.  Travis was loved by his students, fellow staff and parents.”

The Educator of the year for Grades K-6 was born in Madison, Indiana and was raised in Switzerland County.  After graduating high school, he received his Bachelor’s degree in Education. He started his teaching career as a fourth-Grade teacher at Cartmell Elementary School in Carrollton, Kentucky.

He eventually moved back to Indiana in 1999 where he took a position as a 5th grade teacher at Switzerland County Elementary in East Enterprise, Indiana.

He is also a member of the Classroom Teachers Association, the National Education Association and conducted project-based learning through the Indiana Department of Education.

His wife, Amy Lynn Griffith was on hand to accept the award on his behalf.
