Jac-Cen-Del High School basketball fans will turn the stands into a blaze of red Jan. 24 when the school hosts its third annual “RED OUT” to raise awareness about heart disease and stroke at its game against the Shawe Memorial Hilltoppers.
Students and fans are encouraged to participate in the RED OUT by wearing red “GET FIRED UP” t-shirts, which are available for a $10 donation to the American Heart Association. The shirts will be available at JCD throughout Heart Week leading up to the game and at the game.
The RED OUT is a community outreach program of the Student Council, which will be raising donations all week at school with several activities and getting the message out on a heart healthy lifestyle.
All money raised by the “RED OUT” will support the American Heart Association’s mission of building healthier lives free of cardiovascular diseases and stroke in Ripley County. Of all Ripley County deaths, 29.5 percent are due to cardiovascular disease. Nationwide, heart disease is the No. 1 killer of Americans, responsible for one in three deaths. And, congenital heart defects are one of the leading causes of death in children under age 1.
In addition to providing community education programs throughout Indiana, the AHA has funded more than $7.4 million of heart research at universities in Indiana over the last five years.
