Drug overdose cited as cause of Bartholomew County Jail inmate death

COLUMBUS, IN — The death of an inmate at the Bartholomew County Jail in early June has been ruled an accidental drug overdose.

Forty-seven-year-old Gregory Leonard of Columbus was found unresponsive in his cell on June 6. Leonard was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Investigators say Leonard died from a fentanyl overdose.

An autopsy was performed on June 8. Results were forwarded to detectives at the Indiana State Police Versailles Post early last month.
