Greensburg, IN — Catherine Puckett with the consulting firm HWC Engineering made a presentation to Greensburg City Council Tuesday night on the streetscape project, which was part of the city’s READI grant application last year.
Plans call for five blocks of improvements along Washington Street from City Hall and proceeding to the north and east (Franklin Street) sides of the Courthouse Square.
“The biggest thing will be new sidewalks and new surfacing on the road, and then curbs and decorative lighting, pedestrian sight furnishings, street trees and grates along the Square, and then a tree line on the low-intensity blocks along Washington,” Puckett said.
The project will be funded using various state and federal programs.
“The city has put together funding from READI, ARPA, Community Crossings, and a local match so that total is $4.5 million, which includes the design, engineering, and construction,” Puckett added.
Questions and concerns were raised about access to businesses on the Square during the project. Puckett says there will be a contract stipulation that access will be maintained, and that there will be constant communication between the city, business owners, the contractor, and HWC.
“There will be a website and lots of stakeholder meetings to update people on the progress, and then a really tight schedule of which blocks will be under construction and at which times,” Puckette said.
She added the project’s design will take place for the rest of this year, with bids awarded in January. Construction will start in March 2024 and continue through the end of next year.
The Board of Works approved the project agreement with HWC earlier in the evening.
