Dorothy (Gies) Steinmetz, 89 years old of New Alsace, passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 29, 2025. Born in Cincinnati, Dorothy moved to Indiana in the 7th grade and helped her parents with their produce and dairy farm. While living in New Alsace, she attended St. Paul’s grade school and graduated from Guilford High School. Dorothy married Eugene Steinmetz in 1956 and found her purpose in being a mother to not only her 12 children, but to the children of their friends, neighbors, and children’s friends. She created a home that was welcoming and full of love and laughter where everyone called her Mom. In addition to her responsibilities at home, Dorothy also worked at Knueven’s, the New Alsace grocery store, and served tables at The Old Brick in Penntown. A devout Catholic, Dorothy was a member of St. Paul’s Campus and was very active in the church community. She belonged to the Ladies Sodality for many years, including her role as President, and served as the head of the kitchen for the summer church festivals. Dorothy always signed up for hours at the adoration chapel and consistently participated in the prayer group at St. Paul’s. She used her sewing talents to make prayer shawls for those in need and cross stitch quilts for the festivals. Dorothy was also a member and past president of the North Dearborn American Legion Auxiliary Post 452. Dorothy’s smile and joyful presence left an everlasting impact on her community that won’t soon be forgotten.
Dorothy will be deeply missed by her children Eugene “Butch” Steinmetz, Debra (Harold) Scudder, Eric “Rick” (Joanne) Steinmetz, Denise (Carl) Schneider, Dorothy “Dotty” (Darrell) Mobrley, Diane “Nan” (Danny) Lykins, Della “Lou” (Tyrrell) Baynum, Ernie (Elaine) Steinmetz, Devonna “Vonna” (Sam) Smith, Eldon (Jenny) Steinmetz; brother Edwin (Carole) Gies and sons-in-law Steve Killen and Tom Bayse; 26 grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren with one on the way. Dorothy is preceded in death by Eugene Steinmetz, her husband of 55 years, daughters Darlene Killen and Danette Bayse; and parents Edwin and Loretta (Lipps) Gies.
