Osgood, In. — Registrations are now open for Ripley County’s third CyberPatriot Camp. The camp will be held the week of June 24-28, 2019, at Jac-Cen-Del High School, and the fee for the camp is $50 per camper.
The camp will use a nationally renowned Cybersecurity curriculum created by the Air Force Association known as Cyber Patriot: The National Youth Cyber Education Program.
“The development of career pathways in IT necessitates the integration of computer science beginning in elementary school with programs like VEX Robotics, Computer Science Principles in middle school, and AP Computer Science and Cybersecurity in high school,” said Cheryll Obendorf, GPS Director. “It’s important to keep the lessons learned during the school year in the forefront of students’ minds during the summer, and this camp does exactly that.”
As part of the camp, a tour of the Cyber Academy at Muscatutuck Urban Training Center will take place on Wednesday, June 26, for all campers. Rounding out the week, students will participate in a competition on the final day of camp in which students will work to defend their computers from cyber attacks.
Partners in this year’s camp include Northern Kentucky University, Ivy Tech Community College, Batesville School Corporation, Milan School Corporation, and Jac-Cen-Del School Corporation. The camp is funded in part by Southeastern Indiana REMC, Hill-Rom, and Northern Kentucky University.
“These camps exemplify the commitment of Ripley County’s faculty, teachers and community leaders who recognize great potential in our youth and are willing to make a commitment to help them develop that potential to its fullest,” commented Obendorf.
Ripley County students across every district are immersed into a full computer science and information technology culture. Starting as young as pre-K and kindergarten, students are developing digital citizenship, ethical behavior, problem solving and critical thinking skills. These character-building traits are emphasized as students increase knowledge in academic subjects such as algorithmic problem solving, network diagrams and hierarchy and abstraction in computing.
