Coach leaves legacy of ball players behind

Greensburg, IN — “Don’t get your dobber down” would be the words you would hear from Coach Phil Snodgress after his passing. It was his way of motivating his teams over the years if things weren’t going their way.

Phil began his coaching career in Henry County, and then Union County before he made his final career move to Greensburg Community High school in 1976. He coached junior varsity baseball and varsity basketball as well as taught math and driver’s education until his retirement in 1998. As an Algebra 2 teacher, many, including myself found out he liked you when you were a part of his jokes and he liked you even more if you understood that.

Retirement didn’t keep Phil from the hardwood though. He coached 8th-grade boys basketball at the Greensburg Junior High for 7 years after his official retirement, leaving a legacy of basketball in the community for a total of 31 years and spannings generations.  Throughout his career, Phil was named a Ball State Coach of the Year, President of the Indiana Basketball Coach’s Association, EIAC Coach of the Year several years, and he was in the Union County Basketball Hall of Fame.

He loved his students and his athletes and got great pride from watching so many in their own coaching endeavors and in their lives in general. He will certainly be missed by the Greensburg High School Community and beyond.
