Batesville, IN — It’s that sweet time of year.
Schmidt Bakery in the Batesville Shopping Village began in-store sales of its world-renowned Cherry Thing A Lings at 4:00 Thursday morning (pictured).
Clem and Bertie Schmidt opened the bakery in 1963 but it was in 1970 that they started what has become the tradition of selling cherry fritters to celebrate George Washington’s birthday and the President’s Day holiday.
Legend has it that as a boy, the future first President of the United States willingly admitted to chopping down his father’s cherry tree.
Last year, they sold a record 199,584 of the sweet treats, which shattered the previous record of 164,160 in 2021.
Cherry Thing A Lings are available for in-store purchase now through Monday, February 20 from 4 am until 6 pm each day.
