Indianapolis, In. — The Indiana State Board of Animal Health recently authorized a change to align bovine tuberculosis testing requirements with federal rules.
The change, which went into effect back in July, requires dairy cattle entering Indiana to meet the same standard as other cattle and bison. In order to bring cattle or bison into Indiana, the animals must meet specific criteria based on their origin and destination. For example, cattle or bison 18 months of age or older from California must test negative for tuberculosis 60 days before entering Indiana.
Bovine tuberculosis is a serious bacterial disease that can affect cattle, other livestock and even humans. I believe that aligning the requirements for bovine tuberculosis testing with federal rules will help prevent the spread of this disease and keep our livestock healthy.
