CAROL ANN (HAWKINS) BLISS
Carol (Hawkins) Bliss of Dillsboro, IN, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, August 8, 2023, after a brief illness. She was born on September 2, 1944, at The Christ Hospital in Cincinnati, Ohio, to Katherine (Beins) and Thomas Hawkins, both of whom predeceased her. She is survived by R. Terry Bliss, her husband, and their dog Rudy; her sister, Susan Hawkins Graham; her many brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, and numerous nieces and nephews (including great nieces and nephews) and former co-workers and friends.
Carol and Terry married in 1987 and soon moved to Dillsboro, IN, where they had a small farm and where Carol fulfilled a childhood dream – owning her very own horse. One of her most precious childhood presents was a pair of cowboy boots!
Carol spent the first 40 years of her life in Ohio and attended the old Sharonville, Ohio, Elementary School, graduated from Princeton High School, and then studied nursing at The Christ Hospital School of Nursing.
Upon graduation in 1966, she immediately began working as an R.N. in the Labor and Delivery Unit at Christ Hospital, where she spent 22 years. She then transferred to the Women’s Same Day Surgery Center at Christ because, as she explained, she knew it was time to move when she started seeing the babies, she had helped deliver come back to have their own babies. She retired in 2006.
Carol and Terry started traveling the country in their RV, continuing the journeys she had taken as a teenager with her parents in their RV.
She loved to cook and bake, including treats for work, cookies and Buckeyes at Christmas, and cheesecake for every family gathering. Many relatives said their best memory of Carol was her great laugh. A great-niece who is also a nurse said she appreciated the times she and Carol discussed nursing.
Carol also loved another kind of Buckeye – the Ohio State Marching Band and the football team. Fortunately, she and Terry attended a few games in Columbus through the years. To balance that out, she accompanied Terry to South Bend to see his team – Notre Dame.
Since Carol and Terry loved dogs, they have had a number of them through the years. Most have come from shelters.
