Braun on Hand for Signing of Order to Dismantle U.S. ED

Gov. Mike Braun.

(Washington, D.C.)  – Indiana Governor Mike Braun was at the White House Thursday when President Donald Trump signed the order to dismantle the U.S. Department of Education.

Some parents say they’re concerned about the order, but the President says core functions and things such as Pell Grants are staying.

Braun say this is a good thing. The Republican lawmaker says it’s better for states to be in charge of education instead of the federal government.

The Governor says states will still need ways to measure achievement.

“We’re going to have to have those same metrics, that same accountability but devised in a way that make sense,” he said. “And that is actually producing results.”

He was asked about things like free school lunch for low income students and what happens with that program.

“I think all of the things that the federal government has been doing, if the states want the responsibility, yes we’re going to have to find out entrepreneurial ways to do it, and to it sustainably,” Braun said. “The things that we know are good, we needed to keep this, keep around.”
