Bill could reduce solar energy incentives

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — The Indiana House Utilities, Energy, and Telecommunications Committee is considering legislation this week that could phase out incentives to install solar panels.

Senate Bill 309, if approved by the house, would lower the price the power companies pay for excess energy from solar panels to 3.5 cents per Kilowatt Hour down from 11 cents per kWhr.

State Representative Randy Frye.

Currently, only 1 tenth of 1 percent of power generated in Indiana is from solar energy.

According to Frye, 3.5 cents is the same rate power companies buy electricity for wholesale.

Testimony in committee lasted almost 7 hours.

Frye serves on the committee and will have to vote on the bill.

The committee is expected to vote on Wednesday.
