Betsy Lynne Wiley, 65, of Greensburg, Indiana, passed away peacefully on September 16, 2025, at IU Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, surrounded by her loved ones.
Born on April 13, 1960, in Greensburg, Betsy was the beloved daughter of William “Bill” and Judith “Judy” (Mouser) Smith. A proud 1978 graduate of Greensburg Community Schools, Betsy dedicated much of her life to serving her community. She worked for 34 years in the Decatur County Treasurer’s Office as Deputy Treasurer, where her integrity and diligence made a lasting impact.
While continuing to work full-time, Betsy went back to school and earned her Bachelor of Science degree from the Kelley School of Business in 2001 — a testament to her determination and love for learning. She retired from the county office in 2019, but her service didn’t stop there. Betsy continued working for the City Clerk-Treasurer’s Office until 2023, when she retired due to health concerns.
Betsy used her business acumen to support numerous nonprofit organizations, offering her time, knowledge, and heart wherever it was needed. She was a founding member of New Directions in Greensburg, served on the board of the Bread of Life, and kept the financial records at Greensburg United Methodist Church, where she was also a devoted member. Her faith was a cornerstone of her life — steady, strong, and deeply rooted.
Known for her vibrant personality and a good-natured tendency to “be the boss” (a family joke she wore proudly), Betsy was a spirited sports fan who never missed a Pacers or Colts game. She found joy in cross-stitching, reading, and relaxing in front of the TV with her grandkids. She was famous for her cooking and baking — especially when it came to spicy food (the hotter the better). Betsy also had a passion for shopping and was affectionately known as “Mom” and “Mamaw” to many — not just her own children and grandchildren, but to countless others who were lucky enough to be loved by her. She was, in every sense, everyone’s mom and mamaw — always nurturing, always present, and always willing to do anything for anybody.
She is survived by her loving daughter, Shannon (Zachary) Reynolds; her bonus daughter, Kirsten Nentrup; and her cherished grandchildren: Caraline Reynolds, Hannah Reynolds, John Reynolds, Joey Reynolds, and Karina (Mark) Inman. She also leaves behind her great-grandson, Samuel Inman; sisters: Beverly “Susie” Hooten, Bonnie Jo (Carl) Veerkamp, and Barbara “Toodle” (Mike) Halfacre; nieces and nephews: Jessica Hooten, Eric “Pootie” Isaacs, Emilia “Pearl Girl” Hooten, Travis (Zoe Martusewicz) Zeigler, and Katie (Jesse Booth) Zeigler.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Bill and Judy Smith, and her brother-in-law, John (Johnny) McClain.
Betsy will be remembered for her unwavering faith, her servant’s heart, and her fierce love for family and friends. She was the kind of person who made you feel seen, heard, and loved — a rare and beautiful soul whose legacy will live on in all those she touched.
A memorial gathering will be held on Saturday, September 20, from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m., followed by a Celebration of Life service at 3:00 p.m., all at the United Methodist Church in Greensburg. Family and friends are invited to come share memories, laughter, and love in honor of Betsy’s life.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Lymphatic Education and Research Network (LE&RN) at lymphaticnetwork.org.
A special thank you to Manderley Health Care Center for their kindness, compassion, and the care they gave to Betsy — helping her regain a bit of herself and her joy in the time she had left.
