Bernard “Ben” Schlarmann, 90 years of St. Leon, passed away the morning of Sunday, January 5, 2025. Born and raised in White Oak, Ben and his wife, Pat, also lived just outside of Harrison until one day Ben found a beautiful lot in St. Leon. He came across the land one day on his mail delivery route and they decided to build a home where they have lived for the last 35 years.
Ben was a proud veteran of the United States Navy and a lifetime member of the St. Joseph American Legion Post 464 and the VFW Duwel Post 7570. He worked two full time jobs; one as a Mail Carrier out of the Harrison Post Office and another at the P&G loading dock. When he slowed down you would most likely find Ben on a golf course. Golf was his favorite thing in the world. He loved golf so much in fact, that his home in Florida was conveniently located on a golf course. Whether Ben was playing golf or just relaxing, you knew he was having a good time. Ben’s charisma brought out the best in everyone and they gravitated toward him and his fun-loving personality. He and Pat hosted many big picnics at their home where friends and family would come over to hang out, drink a few beers, and have a good time.
Ben will be deeply missed by Pat, his loving wife of 67 years; his children Amy (Mike) Bauer, Terri Schlarmann, Bernie (Cheryl) Schlarmann, Mark Schlarmann, Jenny Westendorf; seven grandchildren, five great grandchildren; and sister Maggie (Dave) Reardon. He is preceded in death by granddaughter, Molly, and parents Bernard and Anna Gherkin Schlarmann.
Services for Ben will be held on Friday, January 10 at St. Paul’s Campus of All Saints Parish. Visitation will begin at 10:00am and continue until the time of Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00am. Burial with military honors will immediately follow in the church cemetery. For those unable to attend, Mass will be live streamed at https://www.youtube.com/user/aspweeklyhomily. Memorials can be made to the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Family and friends are encouraged to leave condolences at www.andres-wuestefeldfh.com.
