Batesville residents bring flood concerns to city council

Batesville, In.— Batesville residents battling flooding issues in recently constructed subdivision approached city council members for help Monday night. The homes are primarily located in the Abbey Lane area north of I-74 and were built in the last 5-years or so.

At least three homeowners say they have worked with the developer and contractor, but have yet to find a solution for the problem.

Contractors have returned on multiple occasions to remove trees, re-grade swales, install additional culverts and install improved protection for basement windows.

Homeowners told council members that water frequently stands in the area of their homes. The excessive wet condition makes it an ideal environment for mosquitoes and makes it difficult to maintain foundations and lawns.

Batesville planning director Tim Macyauski has coordinated efforts to solve the issue with representatives from the engineering firm contracted by the city. Efforts to find a solution are ongoing.

The residents documented thousands of dollars in damage caused by the water conditions. One resident told council members they awoken at midnight during a recent storm with water pouring in a basement after a window had broken from the pressure. Another resident had to pay at least $3,400 to mitigate a mold issue caused by the problem and another resident has attempted at least three different attempts to correct the problem through the original contractor.
