(Batesville, IN) – Batesville Fire and Rescue has been recognized by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) as a Gold Helmet Department for having a high number of firefighters enrolled in the National Firefighter Registry for Cancer.
The National Firefighter Registry is considered the largest effort to understand and reduce cancer among U.S. firefighters.
NIOSH is recruiting firefighters across the country to join the registry so that the agency can better understand the link between firefighting and cancer.
Firefighters are exposed to chemicals at fire scenes, which could increase their risk of developing cancer.
There are many unanswered questions about how cancer risk may vary among those in the fire service.
