(Batesville, IN) – Batesville City Council voted unanimously Monday night in favor of an ordinance to vacate Schrader Street.

It’s part of the Batesville Memorial Public Library’s plan to build an Arts and Innovation Hub.

“This is just the first of many positive steps that we have to get in line before we can begin building the project in earnest, so we’re very grateful for the actions of the council giving us the opportunity to move forward,” said Library Board President Mark Stenger. “This is an exciting time for the City of Batesville. The level of development that’s taking place in our community is something we should all be proud of, and this is just the first of many positive steps.”

The Batesville Advisory Plan Commission forwarded the request vacate Schrader Street to City Council with a unanimous favorable recommendation.

Council held the first reading, suspended the rules and approved the ordinance on second reading by a 5-0 vote.

City Council initially approved the multi-million-dollar project back in November.

The hub will be built directly south of the library.

When completed, library officials say the Arts and Innovation Hub will be a center of lifelong learning, with expanded meeting space for organizations, an area for family visitations and supervised visits, audio/video production facilities, a maker’s space, and they’ll partner with local schools to enhance arts and STEM education.

Bonds are expected to be issued later this year, with construction on the facility slated to begin in 2025.
