Batesville businesses targeted in phone scam

BATESVILLE, IN — The Batesville Police Department says scammers have been calling local businesses, saying they’re with the department, and asking for information to be used in a police report.

Chief Stan Holt says the department received several calls about this Tuesday morning. In one instance, the business asked BPD for verification.

“The manager hung up and called us to confirm that somebody from our agency called, and it was not us,” Holt said. “A lot of times, they’ll say they’re calling from a credit card company or a financial institution, and in those cases, you need to do the same thing – call back on a number that you know is a legitimate number and confirm that it’s not a scam.”

If you receive a call, text, or email that you think is from a scammer, Holt says to call Batesville Police at (812) 934-3131 or your local law enforcement agency.
