(Statewide) – Hoosiers are being warned about a new twist on an old scam: fraudulent text messages now claiming to be from the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV).
Previously, these scams referenced the “Department of Vehicles” (DMV).
These deceptive texts threaten recipients with punitive action for outstanding tickets, but the BMV has clarified they do not send messages about penalties.
Indiana Attorney General Todd Rokita emphasized that the scam’s goal is to steal personal and financial information.
The updated scam messages, now appearing on platforms such as Apple’s iMessage, threaten consequences including suspension of registration and driving privileges, additional fees, prosecution, and negative credit impacts.
Both the BMV and the Attorney General’s Office say if you receive these texts to ignore them, report them, and follow their provided tips for dealing with potential scams.
