(Statewide) – This Saturday is July 1, which means new laws will take effect in Indiana.
Among them:
Pharmacists who undergo mandatory training can prescribe birth control pills, patches, or rings to adults for up to one year, but can refuse to dispense contraceptives for ethical or religious reasons.
Motorists will see an annual gas tax hike of one penny to 35 cents per gallon.
The tax is on top of a regular 7% sales tax on gasoline.
Another law that goes into effect on Saturday is the speed camera program in Indiana construction zones.
INDOT says there will be cameras in four different construction zones in the state starting July 1 and anyone going 11 ½ miles an hour above the posted speed limit will receive a ticket in the mail.
Officials say speeds and crashes have increased in construction zones in recent years.
The first offense will be a warning; a second violation will result in a $75 citation, and additional offenses will be $150 tickets.
