The center offers academic advising and emotional health resources for students.
In addition to the traditional high school guidance offerings, the center is equipped with emotional wellness areas.
BCEF Executive Director Anne Wilson led the effort to fund renovations to make room for the center – part of which students can use if they need a “re-set” before going back to class.
“We’ll have a biofeedback program for students if they’re having anxiety. There’s some privacy pods for students who are having crises, there’s some small group areas and a patio. What we’re trying to do is provide students with the resources that they said they needed,” Wilson said. “Anxiety is a greater and increasing problem for teens, and they said they needed resources while at school to deal with it.”
The project involved moving the guidance area from the front of the school to a more private location and merged the two areas.
BCSC Wellness Coordinator Lisa Tuveson says it’s believed that this is the only student-oriented center of its type in the state.
“We would love for schools to reach out to us and model this program or this center,” Tuveson said. “It’s so important for students to get emotional regulation. So please reach out to us if anyone has any questions or wants any resources, we would be happy to share that information and the research that we did to create the center.
