Governor, Lawmakers Differ on Tax Cuts

(Statehouse) – One of Governor Mike Braun’s campaign promised was, if elected, he would lower property taxes for Hoosiers.

However, his plan to make that happen has been met with serious opposition.

The Governor’s proposed cuts included a Homestead Deduction Increase and a re-set to 2021 tax rates.

However, legislators nixed those proposals and suggested temporary tax caps that would go through 2028.

After that plan was presented to the Governor, Braun adamantly said he would veto the proposal and instead call a special session later this spring to get something passed that is more in line with his original plan.

Indiana Senate President-Pro Tem Rodric Bray of Martinsville said he believes a compromise will be reached before the regular session ends in April, but indicated there is going to be a need for a lot more discussion on both sides before a final resolution is reached.
