The South Decatur High School volleyball team capped their regular season with an impressive 27-4 record, but their ambitions extended far beyond the court’s baseline stats. As they entered the sectional tournament, the Cougars had their eyes on a long-standing prize: the sectional championship.
Their chance came in the sectional final against Morristown, a formidable opponent. With the echoes of their preseason goal in mind, the Cougars rallied with focus and determination, ultimately securing their first sectional title since 1998. The four-set match was a testament to their resilience, with South Decatur prevailing 25-15, 28-26, 25-13, and 25-11.
It was a moment of triumph for the team, turning a dream that began at the start of the season into a reality, now symbolized by the hard-earned trophy they hold.
Key players stood out in the win, with Makayla Somers recording 32 assists, 5 kills, and 6 digs. Her sister, Taylor Somers, contributed 9 kills and 15 digs, while Zsophia Sharp added 8 kills and 19 digs. Aniston Bostic’s blocking prowess was on full display, and Paige McQueen’s 5 kills and 18 digs helped seal the victory.
South Decatur now advances to face Trinity Lutheran in the regional final at Edinburgh on Saturday, October 26, at 7:00 PM, with hopes of continuing their championship run. The match will be broadcast on WRBIradio.com, the WRBI App, and 103.9 FM, WRBI.
