(Batesville, IN) – One Southeastern Indiana YMCA staff member, countless examples of going above and beyond the call to serve others and advance the mission of the Y.
At the YMCA’s January meeting of its Board of Directors, Group Exercise Instructor Tonia Sunderman was presented with the YMCA S.O.A.R. Award (Service and Outstanding Achievement Recognition).
Recognized for pioneering the Y’s “Couch to 5K” program and other group exercise contributions, Southeastern Indiana YMCA Wellness Director, Justin Rogers, said of Sunderman, “From approaching me with the ‘Couch to 5K’ idea, to managing all details, major and minor, she created a really special program. All of her participants crossed the finish line at our 2023 Turkey Trot 5K with a sense of pride and accomplishment. And as far as group exercise, just in the last quarter, Sunderman helped 371 people move closer to their health goals through her Les Mills BODYPUMP® and CORE Power group exercise classes.”
“Everyday before I teach a class, I say a prayer of thanksgiving, that I have the ability to teach, and the opportunity,” Sunderman said. “Not only for the facility, but also the people, the people are what it’s all about.”
“Sunderman exemplifies our Y mission by enhancing the quality of life for our members and our larger YMCA community. She does an amazing job.” added Tara Britton, Southeastern Indiana YMCA Chief Executive Officer.
