Versailles, IN — The Shelby Township Advisory Board plans to enter into a fire protection contract with the New Marion Volunteer Fire Department if the department becomes compliant and files the required paperwork with the state.
This comes after Tuesday afternoon’s township advisory board meeting, which was held in the Commissioners Room of the Ripley County Courthouse Annex to accommodate the public and firefighters from several area departments.
The New Marion Volunteer Fire Department Corporation was administratively dissolved in March 2010.
In addition to reports and paperwork, other issues include liability and workers’ compensation insurance, plus training and certification.
The township advisory board was set to consider a fire protection contract with either the Versailles or Otter Creek (Holton) fire departments, but New Marion Fire Department attorney Wil Goering told the board he expects the department to be reinstated and compliant by April 1.
If the department is either reinstated or files new articles of incorporation, the township can enter into a contract with New Marion.
In the meantime, several other items still need to be hammered out, including whether the State Board of Accounts will allow for prorated contract dollar amounts, among other issues.
