Batesville, IN — Batesville City Council this week approved on second reading the amended boundaries of the four city council districts for next year’s election.

The city is required by state law to review council districts every 10 years after the US Census no later than November 8 the year before a municipal election.

The city administration worked with HWC Consulting to redistrict based on the new population of 7,202.

As a result, Districts 1 and 2 will be unchanged.

But council districts 3 and 4 are flip-flopping a section of Ripley and Franklin counties, which means all of District 3 will be in Ripley County and District 4 will be made up entirely of Batesville residents who live in Franklin County.

Under the new rules – again based on Batesville passing the population 7,000 mark – voters next year will elect the Mayor, Clerk-Treasurer, City Judge  (if the court is not dissolved),  the at-large council member and only the councilmember in the district in which they reside.

Previously, residents could vote for all four district council members as well as for the at-large member.
