SOUTHEASTERN IN — The National Weather Service (NWS) in Wilmington, Ohio, has issued a Heat Advisory for Ripley, Franklin, and Dearborn counties until 8 pm Tuesday, while the NWS in Indianapolis has issued a similar advisory for Decatur County until 8 pm.
Forecasters say heat index values up to 102 degrees are expected, and those hot temperatures combined with high humidity may cause heat illnesses to occur.
Health experts recommend drinking plenty of fluids, staying in an air-conditioned room, staying out of the sun, and checking up on relatives and neighbors. Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances.
In addition, you should take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. When possible reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening.
Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heatstroke. Wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing when possible.
To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned environments.
Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location.
Heatstroke is an emergency and if you see someone showing the symptoms, call 9-1-1 immediately.
