Recycling thru the holidays

With the holiday season is upon us, Southeastern Indiana Recycling District (SEIRD) would like to suggest planning for an Earth-friendly holiday season is as easy as remembering the trusty “reduce,
reuse, recycle” adage.

According to Jason Rogers, SEIRD Citizens Advisory Committee member, in the decoration department, many are already champions of reuse by the tradition of unboxing and placing decorations each year in your home. When it comes to lights, consider buying LEDs, which are widely available, last longer than traditional bulbs, and consume less energy.

At mealtime, consider washable and reusable dinnerware and cutlery. This can significantly decrease the amount of waste you send to the landfill.

Ideas for eco-friendly gift-giving abound. Like decorations, homemade gifts always carry a special sentiment, but even those of us who aren’t so crafty can make a difference. Consider
giving items in reusable gift bags, or in recyclable boxes wrapped in old newspapers.

When it comes to recycling, keep the Recycle Right motto in mind. Stick to the basics when it comes to recycling. You can’t go wrong with clean and dry cardboard, mixed paper, steel and aluminum cans, clear and colored glass bottles and jars, and #1 and #2 plastic bottles and jugs.
