Greensburg, IN — The Indonesian Consul General paid a visit to Greensburg on Monday to promote the importance of the soybean trade between Indiana and Indonesia. Indiana is the 3rd highest exporter of soybeans to the country. Several local dignitaries gathered to hear a presentation on Tempeh at Mayasari Indonesian Grill.

Maya Mays, owner and operator of Maysari Indonesian Grill and Mayasari Indonesian Tempeh, her future manufacturing business, stated, “Tempeh is a traditional Indonesian soy product, that is made from fermented soybeans. It is made by a fermentation process that binds soybeans into a cake form.” Maya says it is especially popular as it is a staple source of protein, “Like tofu, tempeh is made from soybeans, but it is a whole soybean product with different nutritional and textural qualities. Tempeh’s fermentation process and its retention of the whole bean give it a higher content of protein, dietary fiber, and vitamins. It has a firm texture and an earthy flavor.”

The Consul General, Meri Binsar Simorangkir discussed the future of enhancing soybean trade. Steve Budiono, CEO of Glogens, a coal fertilizer company, spoke about the benefits of using the organic fertilizer on soybean crops and discussed the future possibilities of a coal fertilizer manufacturing plant in the midwest.
