The St. Louis 5th Grade Girls team improved to 6-0 on the season with a 44 to 3 victory over the St. Nicholas Saints on Monday, February 10. The Lady Cardinals gave a very well rounded effort as they had the offense and defense working on both ends of the court. The Lady Cardinals jumped out to a 13-3 first-quarter lead behind Mimi Smith who had 5 of her team-high 11 points in the first quarter. Mimi then turned the scoring over to Ella King who scored 8 of the 13 points in the 2nd quarter on the way to a 26-3 halftime lead. Ella finished with 10 points. The Lady Cardinals then started spreading the ball around in the second half and were able to get everyone in the scorebook on their way to the 44-3 final. Madden Showalter finished with 9 points and Belle Young added 6 points. The Lady Cardinals will now play Mt Carmel on Tuesday night at Mt Carmel starting at 5:30 pm.

The 6th Grade Lady Cardinals traveled to St. Nicholas to take on the Saints. After a slow start, Rachel Suttmann hit a shot at the end of the first half, to bring the Cardinals within 2 points, with a score of 9-7. The third quarter, the Cardinals stepped up their scoring game and took the lead. In the last few minutes of the game, the Cardinals lost the lead, but with seconds remaining on the clock, Paige Watters came up with a huge weak side rebound and put the ball back in for 2 points, winning the game.  The final score was 14-13, bringing the Cardinals to 3-4 on the season. Leading in scoring was Bridget Lohmueller and Rachel Suttmann with 5 points each and Karsyn Watson and Paige Watters each had 2 points.  It was a total team effort. Coach Suttmann and Coach Watson were very proud of the team’s tenacious defense.  Cora Roth, Meg Ritter, and Isabel Imel did a grabbed several rebounds.  Katelyn Rahe and Jaelyn Owens played well on defense and weren’t afraid to fight after the ball.  Great job by everyone!
