Registration open for Summer Manufacturing Camp

Batesville, In. —Registrations are now open for the fourth annual summer Manufacturing Camp for middle school students, which will take place June 18-20 from noon to 5 p.m.

The camp is designed by six leading companies in Ripley County, Genesis: Pathways to Success, and Ivy Tech Community College, and transportation for the camp is provided by the Batesville Community School Corporation. The companies involved in the camp include Batesville Casket, Batesville Tool & Die, Hillenbrand, Hill-Rom, Wood-Mizer, and Thrive Market.

“The purpose of the camp is to expose students to the wide variety of career opportunities that exist locally in the manufacturing sector,” commented Cheryll Obendorf, Genesis Director.  “With strong support from Ivy Tech and the local manufacturing community for programs like this, middle school students are extraordinarily fortunate to experience manufacturing through this camp.”

During this camp, students will discover what is being manufactured in their own backyards by meeting with leading industry experts and touring local manufacturing facilities.  Each day, students will engage in hands-on activities that teach skills necessary in modern manufacturing. At the end of each day, campers return to Ivy Tech Community College where they participate in wrap-up activities that emphasize what they experienced at the manufacturing facilities each day.

Students came away an awareness of careers available with local manufacturers. They also obtain knowledge of the skills needed, high school classes available to help them obtain those skills, and postsecondary training offered to support further skill development.

“Many of Ripley County’s manufacturers are home grown businesses; businesses that were started by local residents whose hard work and dedication has allowed them to build global companies. Manufacturing Camp is an opportunity for us to highlight that entrepreneurial spirit to the workforce of the future, as well as to emphasize the impact the manufacturing sector has on the local economy,” stated Amy Streator, Executive Director of the Ripley County Community Foundation.

Space is limited to 60 middle school students from throughout southeastern Indiana. Register online at www.genesisp2s.org, or contact Laura Hamilton at the Ripley County Community Foundation, 812-933-1098 or [email protected].
