Options being considered to increase road funding

statehouseINDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — The Indiana House of Representatives begins their session Wednesday (1/4), and this year is a budget session.

Lawmakers will be in Indianapolis through April to complete the state’s 2 year budget, which according to Representative Randy Frye, is expected to exceed $31 Billion the next 2 years.

Under the state’s constitution, during a budget year, the budget is the only legislation congress is mandated to complete.

However, Representative Frye says that congress will also be working on road funding.

The increase in road funding will require an increase in revenue for the state.

Increases on the gas tax, vehicle registration fees, and cigarette taxes are being considered, as well as possibly converting Indiana’s interstates, into toll roads.

The roads and transportation committee will look at all possible options and decide which one they think is best for the state.
