(Rising Sun, IN) – Rising Sun City Council voted unanimously this week to disband its police force and merge with the Ohio County Sheriff’s Office.
The department is down to three cops and has struggled to hire and retain officers in recent years for a variety of reasons.
The three officers are expected to transfer to the sheriff’s office.
Rising Sun PD has not had a permanent chief for nearly five years.
Former Chief David Hewitt died in a crash in 2019 and the interim police chief retired not long afterward.
The next interim chief was Harlis Steven Hoover Jr., who is on administrative leave, facing a 17-felony count indictment on Bribery, Fraud, Official Misconduct, Theft and Ghost Employment charges.
Ohio County Commissioners are expected to approve the agreement on Monday. If all goes according to plan, the merger would take effect next month.
