(Greensburg, IN) – The completion of the final Decatur County Bicentennial project was celebrated during a ribbon cutting by the Greensburg/Decatur County Chamber of Commerce Wednesday for the 1822 Alleyway in downtown Greensburg (pictured).
John Pratt was chairman of the Bicentennial Committee.
“It’s kind of crazy to think that it’s been two years since we had the Bicentennial, and lo and behold we did 45-plus events and activities,” Pratt said. “And isn’t it nice that there’s a legacy project right here in downtown Greensburg that is attached to it.”
Pratt says the restored space was the vision of Decatur County Visitors Commission Executive Director Philip Deiwert.
“We just wanted it to be kind of a showstopper when people are driving by,” Deiwert said. “So many people come through Greensburg, Decatur County on Main Street here, which connects to State Road 46, U.S. 421 and State Road 3 and it really is the heart of the downtown, the heart of the community. And to have this be the place where people are driving by, they see it and they want to stop in and see what else is going on in this community.”
Deiwert says the alley was used by a few pedestrians before the restoration but was unfinished, dark and had broken blacktop.
He believes signs thanking visitors for coming will make use of the alley more inviting, and says he’s happy with way the project turned out.
Speakers at the event included Pratt, Greensburg/Decatur County Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Dawn Lowe, Greensburg Mayor Joshua Marsh, Brad Boyd with the Honda Indiana Auto Plant, and Main Street Greensburg Executive Director Allie Beck.
