Marion S. Angelo, formerly of Endwell and Johnson City, New York, passed away on September 3, 2017, at St. Andrew’s Nursing Home in Batesville, Indiana.
Marion was born in Brooklyn, NY, on May 30, 1926. She was the daughter of Clarence M. Stowe Sr. and Isabel Raynor Stowe. She and her older brother Clarence Jr. grew up in Hollis, Queens County, New York. Marion attended Queens College on a full scholarship and earned a BA in sociology. She did graduate work in social work at Columbia University before beginning a career in social work in New York city.
In 1953 she met Raymond Angelo through the young adult groups at their churches. In 1955 they were married and they enjoyed 58 very happy years together until his death on November 18, 2013. In 1962 Ray began working at IBM in Endicott, NY, and the family moved to Endwell.
Marion loved to travel. The family had taken many trips in the United States and Canada, and when Ray retired in 1990 he and Marion began touring the world. They went to England, Scotland, Northern Italy, Sicily, China, and the USSR (twice). In 2005 to celebrate their 50th anniversary their children sent them to Alaska. Between 1995 and 2008 Marion and her daughter Marilyn went on every Art History trip that Binghamton University offered.
Marion was a born leader. Her family would remind her that it is possible to join an organization without becoming its president, but Marion always took a leadership role. She served as moderator of the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Binghamton, president of Lyceum, the learning in retirement organization at Binghamton University, and librarian for the Tuscarora Chapter, National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She became a member of the P.E.O. sisterhood just before her 19th birthday. She was a founding member of P.E.O. chapter BO in Binghamton in 1969 and served as its first president. She was also a founding member of chapter CL, Binghamton, in 2004. She served on the board of the New York State Chapter of the P.E.O. sisterhood starting in 1982, serving as state president in 1989. She was also a dedicated Bridge player.
