DECATUR COUNTY, IN — The Washington Township Trustee Board this week took a proposed $1.8 million bond off the table after failing to gain support for the plan.
The bond issue called for financing a permanent township home office, the clean-up of Lake McCoy, and maintenance of cemeteries around the township.
As a result, the township will continue to rent space, but cemetery upkeep and the Lake McCoy cleanup will go on.
“We’re going to pay for things that need to be done with cash on hand instead of doing a bond and stretching the payments out,” said Washington Township Trustee Christian Rust.
He added they are able to do this while making an effort to lighten the load on taxpayers.
“We lowered our property taxes on the unincorporated area of Washington Township and we also lowered our income tax that the township was collecting,” Rust said. “We’re really able to look at our budget and tighten our belts, and do more with less.”
The bond issue was proposed earlier this year.
