Two arrested in alleged racially-charged incident

RUSHVILLE, Ind. – Two suspects have been charged in connection to an alleged altercation outside of a Rushville bar on Halloween weekend.

Steven A. Gilbert, 27, and David Mandrell, 36, were arrested on battery and intimidation charges Tuesday, according to the Rushville Republican.

Police say the victim, a black male, told them it was a racially motivated attack and he was beaten and kicked outside of the Twisted Sisters Bar in Rushville in the early morning hours of Nov. 1.

According to court documents, Stephen Gilbert told police that is not what happened. He claimed that an altercation began after giving the victim $50 for marijuana, which he did not receive or get his money back.

Gilbert declined ever hitting or kicking the victim.

Police interviewed witnesses after the altercation who claimed one of the suspects threatened to “shoot the place up.”
