Twisters And Cougars Battle It Out In Volleyball

VolleyballTuesday, the 29th , the Oldenburg Twisters volleyball teams hosted South Decatur Cougars. The Twisters and Cougars split on the evening with the OA JV picking up the win and the Varsity dropping the match 3-1. Scores for the varsity match were 13-25, 25-8, 25-13, and 25-19. “This was a particularly disappointing loss for us tonight. We came out strong in the first set and dominated with our serving and defense. However, we didn’t carry that intensity over to the next set and after four straight receiving and attacking errors, we did not recover. The team has battled this phenomena all year. We played stronger in the 3rd and 4th sets, but still not with enough positive energy to put that second set in the past and move forward on the night.” OA was led by senior Audrey Oesterling with 7 kills on 28 attacks, 18 serve receptions and only 3 errors, and 9 points on 13 serves. Junior Samantha Nobbe added 3 kills on 10 attacks and junior MacKenzie Corbin added 10 serve receptions with 1 error and 7 points on 9 serves. Elizabeth Fiutem, junior, handled the setting with a season high 107 attempts with only 5 errors. The Twisters were only able to convert 16 of those sets into kills on the evening. Fiutem also had 12 points on 19 serves with 7 aces. With the loss, the Twisters are 8-21 on the year.

The Twister JV bounced back from an uninspired effort against Trinity Lutheran on Monday night to sweep South Decatur in straight sets, 18-25 and 20-25. From the service line, the Twisters were led by Abbi Eldridge and Katie Kinker with 8 points on 12 serves, 5 aces and 10 points on 14 serves, 5 aces. The Twister attack had 11 kills on 40 attempts led by Alex Bamonte and Lydia Gigrich who hit 0.500 and 0.250 for the evening, respectively. OA received serve well with only 2 errors in 27 attempts on the night and a team passer rating of 2.24. Kinker and Hanna Hurm split the setting duties with 4 and 7 assists on 20 and 28 attempts, respectively and only 1 error on the night. “The JV had a very uninspired and lackluster performance against Trinity Lutheran on Monday night. So this was a very important bounce back win. Our JV is composed of 9 freshmen and 1 sophomore. As a very young group, learning to rely on each other and play focused, energy filled volleyball has been their challenge all season. They are a good team when they play with purpose and intensity like tonight” The win improves the JV record to 4-10.
