Brookville Lake has been added to the list of Indiana lakes with an increase in blue-green algae.

The lake is one of three in Indiana currently under the blue-green algae advisory. DNR officials are warning swimmers and boaters to avoid drinking the water or coming in contact with the algae. The announcement also applies to pets.

Blue-green algae is fueled by heat, sunlight and fertilizer runoff from lawns and farms. Some blue-green algae produce toxins that can cause rashes, skin and eye irritation, nausea, stomachaches, and tingling fingers and toes.

Biologists discovered higher levels at Brookville Lake this month, which marks the third body of water in the state to documented by the DNR.
