A 2010 Batesville High School graduate shook hands with President Obama on Wednesday.

Tom Jeffers Jr. was among this year’s 1,064 graduates from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.

The former Bulldog football standout received his diploma from the commander-in-chief and has been commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Army.

Jeffers will now report to Fort Hood, Texas and join an infantry unit.

He was an all-state receiver for the Bulldogs and part of the 2009 sectional championship football team. He played collegiate sprint football at West Point and won conference championships and received individual accolades.

Batesville Middle School teacher Aaron Garrett said, “Congratulations to Tom and his family. I am proud to see him succeed through many hardships and emerge as an officer and leader in the U.S. Army!”
