County Clerks Could Soon Issue Same-Sex Wedding Licenses

BROOKVILLE, Ind. – County clerks will be required by federal law to issue same-sex marriage licenses after the U.S. Supreme Court decided Monday to not hear cases on the controversial issue.

Ripley and Franklin County Clerk’s Offices said Monday they have yet to issue gay marriage licenses after the federal decision was made, but that could change as early as Tuesday.

The Decatur County Clerk will issue same-sex marriage licenses in light of the Supreme Court decision, the Greensburg Daily News reports.

The high court declined to hear the cases, thus, leading to the decision previously made by lower courts to strike down same-sex unions to stand as current law.

Indiana Governor Mike Pence remarked, “While it is disappointing to many that the Supreme Court has chosen not to hear arguments on this important issue, under our system of government, people are free to disagree with court decisions but we are not free to disobey them.

“As Governor of all the people of Indiana I am confident that Hoosiers will continue to demonstrate the civility for which we are known and respect the beliefs of all people in our state.”

The federal justices have not made a ruling on same-sex marriage nationwide.
