A local city is struggling financially and may not have enough money in the general fund to cover payroll and expenses by May 1.

Connersville Mayor Leonard Urban attributes the economic decline to the closure of the Visteon Plant in 2008, which once employed over 5,000 people, and also the statewide property tax caps in 2009.

A financial emergency was filed this week which allows the mayor to make immediate budget cuts and restructure some union contracts. The city has eliminated city worker overtime, purchasing, and limited gas and diesel purchases as the city faces a possible $350,000 deficit.

The city has lost more than $3 million in revenue since 2008. The mayor has not yet cut any city jobs.
