Franklin County Surveyor Joe Gillespie estimates about one hundred unmaintained roads will be impacted if commissioners decide to vacate old roads.

The plan is to vacate roads that are not managed by the Franklin County Highway Department and not in the official county road system, such as a dead end.

Commissioners look to relieve the roads from the county to avoid maintenance costs and liability, according to the Franklin County Observer.

The surveyor advises property owners that do not want their road vacated to notify him.

Commissioners could vote on a mass vacation of all roads unless they receive an objection, which could then be voted on by a case-by-case basis.

A public hearing date has not been set.
