Cardinals Win Opening Games At SEI Tourney

basketballThe St. Louis 7th grade basketball team hosted the visiting South Dearborn Squires in the 1st round of the SEI tournament on Monday night 44-20.

The Cardinals came out playing good solid defense and were able to hold the Squires to just two points in the half as they went into intermission with a comfortable 25-2 lead. The Squires offense finally got on track in the second half but were not able to make a run against the Cardinals as the final scored ended 44-20 in favor of St. Louis.

There were several Cardinals that made the scoring column as Kurt Siefert had 3, Wil Freeland 7, Riley Schebler 2, Ben Schebler 1, Andrew Oesterling 17, Karson Macke 2, Lleyton Ratcliffe 8, and Sam Voegele 4. Jack Forbeck and Jack Aplanalp both came off the bench and handled the ball well under the Squires full court pressure giving the Cardinals some easy baskets. The defense was led by Voegele on the boards and Tyler Kuntz on the outside.

The Cardinals advance to the second round of the tournament and play Jac-Cen-Del. The game will be played at the South Dearborn Middle School at 5:30 on Tuesday January 19th.

The St. Louis 8th grade boys basketball team hosted South Dearborn in the first round of the SEI basketball tournament Monday night and will move on to the semi-finals after defeating South Dearborn 36 to 22.

St. Louis will play the winner of the Jac Cen Del/Greendale game Tuesday at South Dearborn. They will follow the 7th grade game which begins at 5:30.

Balance scoring and stingy defense made it difficult for South Dearborn throughout the contest.

Charlie Dice opened the game with a 3 ball to go along with a couple of nifty passes to Jacob Deutsch, who converted on both field goals and the Cardinals took the early lead. Deutsch continued to find the open lane in the paint and helped St. Louis to a 16 to 11 lead at the half.

The third quarter saw Adam Cox knock down a pair of field goals and the Cardinals extended their lead to 25 to 14 heading to the final quarter.  Johnathan Deal provided 5 fourth quarter points to put the game away.

Jacob Deutsch led all scorers with 13 points and many big rebounds.  Charlie Dice finished with 8 points, Johnathan Deal had 7 points.  Adam Cox added 6 points to go along with a fine game at the point position.  Abe Peetz and Zach Harmeyer added a free throw each.
